PURPOSE:To provide a vibration damping device which may permit a minute displacement of a structure due to a wind pressure or a temperature change, etc. without any restrictions and absorb a sudden vibrational displacement due to an earthquake, etc., by fixing a cylindrical resisting member with a minute annular spacing defined between the same and an inner circumferential surface of a cylindrical member filled with a viscous material. CONSTITUTION:There is provided in a cylindrical member 1 a piston 9 fixed to an end of a rod 7 and formed with a through-hole 10 of a large diameter. A cylindrical resisting member 11 is fixed on an outer circumferential surface of the piston 9, and there is defined a minute annular spacing S between the cylindrical resisting member 11 and the cylindrical member 1. The spacing S is secured by a spacer 12. Owing to a viscous shear resisting force of a viscous material 18 filled in the minute spring S, there is created a small resisting force against a gentle relative displacement, while there is created a greatly large resisting force against a sudden relative displacement. A change in volume of the cylindrical member 1 is absorbed by extension and contraction of a bellows 14 mounted to a cap of the cylindrical member 1 so as not to generate an inner pressure.
