NEW MATERIAL:The optically active propargyl alcohol derivative of formula I (R is H or halogen; X is phenyl or thienyl; Y is halogen, 1W3C alkyl or 1W 3C alkoxy; Z is 1W3C alkyl or phenyl; n is 0 or 1).
EXAMPLE: Optically active isomer of 1-phenyl-1-(1-chloroethyl)-propargyl alcohol.
USE: A resolution reagent for various racemic compounds, and raw materials of pharmaceuticals, agricultural chemicals, perfumes, etc.
PREPARATION: The racemic compound of formula I is made to contact with l- brucine of formula II in an organic solvent, and the resultant diastereomer is separated taking advantage of the solubility difference. The optically active isomer of formula I can be prepared by decomposing the separated component. The racemic compound used as the starting material can be prepared e.g. by reacting the compound of formula III with the Grignard reagent of e.g. formula CH≡CMgBr, etc. in a solvent such as tetrahydrofuran at 0°CWnormal temperature for about 0.1W5hr.
