Abstract:
PURPOSE:To form a hydrophobic thin film by dispersing a hydrophobic functional material in water with a surfactant with the hydro-phobic part contg. an aromatic azo compd. residue and electrolytically reducing the surfactant under specified conditions to deposit the fine particle of the hydrophobic functional material on the surface of a cathode. CONSTITUTION:A surfactant consisting of a hydrophobic part and a hydrophilic part and containing the hydrophobic part contg. an aromatic azo compd. residue is used to dissolve or disperse a hydrophobic functional material (a photoconductive material, etc.) milled to an appropriate particle diameter in water or in a mixed solvent of water and an org. solvent (acetonitrile, etc.) compatible with water. Electrolysis is then conducted at a potential where the constituent of a conductive substrate acting as a cathode or an electrode is not eluted to electrolytically reduce the surfactant in the vicinity of the cathode surface. Consequently, the solubilized or dispersed state of the hydrophobic functional material is broken, the hydrophobic material is deposited on the surface of the substrate acting as a cathode or electrode, and a thin film is formed.
