Abstract:

PURPOSE: To eliminate the macro and micro segregation and center porosity of a billet by maintaining the surface temp. of the billet on the side nearer the mold side than the unsolidified front end at a prescribed temp. and reducing the part near the unsolidified front end according to the rate of shrinkage on solidification and making face support.

CONSTITUTION: The billet 3 conducted from a mold 1 of a continuous casting machine to guide rolls 2... is passed through a walking bar type face supporting member 4 and while the part near the unsolidified front end of the billet 3 is grasped by the face, the billet is reduced according to the volume which shrinks on solidification. The surface temp. of the billet on the side nearer the mold than the unsolidified front end is maintained at 600W900°C from about 1 minuet when the increasing to the rigidity to permit the uniform dispersion of the face supporting pressure over the entire shell surface can be expected to about 7 minutes when the expectation of the effective recuperation of the billet after the completion of the solidification under the face support is difficult. The casting of the ingot having no macro and micro segregation and center porosity is thus made possible.
