PURPOSE: To control surface roughness while improving the original unit of a grinding wheel by attaching a preceding grinding wheel portion with rough and antiwear grains and a succeeding one with fine and relatively easy-to-wear grains to a same rotary shaft.
CONSTITUTION: A rotary grinding wheel is constituted from a preceding grindig wheel portion 2 with rough and antiwear grains and a succeeding one 3 with fine and relatively easy-to-wear grains attached together to a same rotary shaft. And the surface of a steel block 1 to be ground is ground by the rotary grinding wheel inclined by a predetermined angle θ to the grinding direction 5 or by making the preceding grinding wheel portion 2 precede and feeding said grinding wheel in the feed direction 4 while reciprocating the rotary grinding wheel in the grinding direction 5 parallel to the surface 1. The ground surface A is at first ground efficiently by the preceding grinding wheel 2 and then the roughly ground surface is finely smoothed by the succeeding grinding wheel 3 to eventually provide the surface roughness corresponding to the succeeding grinding wheel 3. Thus, the surface roughness of the ground surface can be controlled properly while the life of the grinding wheel is improved.
