USE: A herbicide. Controlling germination and growth of weeds, destroying selectively perennial weeds. When paddy rice plants of direct sowing culture are subjected to soil treatment at about flooding, thr herbicide shows excellent herbicidal effect on cyperaceous weeds such as Cyperus serotinus Rottb, bulrush, umbrella plant, slender spikerush, etc. and gramineous weeds such as Echinochloa crus-galli Beauv. var. praticola Ohwi.
PROCESS: An α,α-dialkylnaphthylmethylamine shown by the formula II is reacted with a phenylacetic acid shown by the formula II or its reactive derivative (e.g., substituted phenylacetic acid chloride shown by the formula IV) to give a compound shown by the formula I . The reaction between the compound shown by the formula IV and a compound shown by the formula II is carried out in an ether solvent in the presence of a base under reflux by heating.
