PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound in high selectivity in high yield, by subjecting 1,4-butanediol to catalytic oxidative dehydrogenation with molecular oxygen in the presence of a catalyst comprising palladium and lead made by a specific preparation.
CONSTITUTION: The desired compound is obtained by subjecting 1,4-butanediol to catalytic oxidative dehydrogenation with molecular oxygen in the presence of a catalyst made by a preparation method wherein a palladium compound is reduced by a well-known reduction method such as reduction with formalin or hydrazine while or after the compound is supported on a carrier such as active carbon, grphite, alumina, etc. by a method such as well-known impregnation, blending, evaporation to dryness, etc. or after being dried, it is reduced with a reducing agent such as hydrogen gas, etc., and a lead compound in an amount to give an atom ratio of lead to palladium of 0.3W3 is supported on the reduced palladium compound by the well-known above-mentioned method.
