PURPOSE: To obtain monoethylene glycol and other glycols usable as a raw material of synthetic fibers, from an aqueous solution of crude glycol produced in the production process of ethylene oxide, by treating the solution by the combination of a low-temperature distillation and a hydrogenation treatment.
CONSTITUTION: Ethylene oxide is produced by the vapor-phase catalytic oxidation of ethylene. The produced aqueous solution of crude glycol is distilled to separate water therefrom, and the resultant essentially anhydrous crude glycol liquid is distilled in vacuum at a bottom temperature of ≤180°C (preferably ≤160°C) to separate the crude distilled glycol at a recovery of ≤95wt%. The obtained crude distilled glycol is hydrogenated with H2 gas at ≤200°C (preferably 120W180°C) in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst (e.g. nickel-based catalyst), and is purified (at ≤200°C, preferably ≤180°C) to obtain a high-purity ethylene glycol.
