PURPOSE: To obtain a small sized serial printer that carries columns synchronously with the printing time and presses the type surface on a type drum in rolling contact with a printing paper for printing by a method wherein the type drum rotates in the same direction as the printing column direction.

CONSTITUTION: The titled small sized serial printer has the type drum 71 that rotates in the same direction as the printing column direction, the carriage 15 that carries this type drum 71, a control member for rotating and moving the type drum 71, and a solenoid 17 for controlling this control member. A type belt composed of a plurality of elastic bodies on a cylindrical drum base is mounted on the type drum 71. One end 35a of the printing hammer 35 faces the drum base while the other end thereof faces the outside of the drum base. While the carriage is running, the hammer 35 strikes the type belt from the side of the belt through a cam member that is engaged with the outer end of this hammer 35 and the type section is put in forced rolling contact with the printing paper so that the paper is printed.
