PURPOSE: To obtain a composite roll having exceptionally strengthened and toughened body core and necks, by casting centrifugally the body core then casting a molten core metal therein and charging a bar- or wire-like inoculant coated with an iron sheath into the molten core metal.
CONSTITUTION: The molten metal of a high Cr material or the like is cast into a metallic casting mold 1 coated with prescribed refractories on the inside surface and is centrifugally cast to form a body shell (a) having a prescribed thickness. When the shell (a) solidifies thoroughly in the mold 1, the mold 1 is vertically erected and a vertical casting mold 4 is constituted together with sand type casting molds 2, 3 for upper and lower necks which are separately prepared. A molten core metal 5 forming a body core (b) and both necks (c), (c) is cast by stationary cast into the mold 4 from the upper part thereof and is charged up to the riser. Before the metal 5 solidifies, a bar- or wire-like inoculant 6 coated with an iron sheath is charged into the mold 4 from the upper part into the hollow part of the upper neck (c). As a result the three of the shell (a), the core (b) and both necks (c), (c) are metallurgically melt-stuck and united to one body, and the composite roll having the high effect of inoculation in the optional core material part and having strength and toughness is formed by casting.
