PURPOSE: To obtain a packing material easy to assemble, suitable for exhaust gas treatment and reduced in pressure loss, by obliquely providing a large number of porous cylinders to form a stage while forming a large number of stages into a cylindrical assembled and connected packing material.
CONSTITUTION: An upper stage grid like holder 1 and a lower stage grid like holder 1' are formed into, for example, a checkerboard like shape from a hard synthetic resin. The lower stage grid like holder 1' is provided so as to correspond to the grid opening parts of the upper stage grid like holder 1 for example, at a proper interval of 150mm. Porous cylinders 2 are respectively obliquely inserted from the grid opening parts of each row of the upper stage holder 1 to the grid opening parts adjacent to each row of the lower stage holder 1 corresponding to the grid opening parts of each row of said upper stage holder to form a packing material 3. For example packing materials 3 are stacked in three stages in the main body 4 of an exhaust gas treating apparatus to fill said main body 4 and an absorbing liquid is supplied to a tower 4 from the upper part thereof by a liquid sprinkler 5 while exhaust gas is introduced from an upper pipe 6 or a lower pipe 7 to be brought into contact with the absorbing liquid in a concurrent or countercurrent state.
