PURPOSE: To provide a centering device for materials of high performance requiring no installation space by providing side guiding devices that grasp the material to the cross heads of a press and hold the same in parallel with the planes of dies and providing mechanisms for escaping the side guiding devices during pressing of the material thereto.
CONSTITUTION: When a slab S conveyed to a press is oblique with respect to the planes of dies 2, the slab S is grasped by the side guiding devices 3 provided to the cross heads 1 of the press and is centered so that the slab is made parallel with the planes of the dies 2. Thereafter the preceding or succeeding end of the slab S is located to the parts of the dies 2 by guiding the same with the guiding rolls 10 and guiding plates 11 of the devices 3. The heads 1 are moved to the central side of the slab S by means of cylinder devices to push the dies 2 to the slab S to a prescribed extent. The rolls 10 and the plates 11 are pushed by the slab S in this time but are escaped by rotating the rolls 10.
