Abstract:
PURPOSE:To enable fast switching which depends upon none of a carrier life time, a CR time constant, etc., by connecting a grating which has a phase shift area and a structure which has an optical gate function in series in propagation directions of light. CONSTITUTION:The optical switch is constituted by connecting the grating 8 which has the phase shift area and the structure 9 which has the optical gate function in series in the propagation directions 10a-10c of light. When a control light pulse is made incident on this grating 8, switching corresponding to the rising of control light becomes every fast because of the time response of the transmissivity of the grating part and switching corresponding to the falling of the control light requires a specific time. When a current is supplied to an optical amplifier 9, on the other hand, the optical amplifier absorbs signal light in a zero-current state. For the purpose, the grating 8 and optical amplifier 9 are connected in series in the propagation directions of the signal light. Consequently, the optical switch which is easily manufactured and operates fast is obtained.
