PURPOSE: To prevent occurrence of dirt on the surface of spinneret caused by volatile low-molecular-weight substance and to prevent occurrence of spinning troubles, by spraying a wash gas having a temperature almost equal to the spinning temperature on the surface of spinneret of melt spinning.
CONSTITUTION: In subjecting carbon fiber of petroleum pitch to melt spinning, the surface of the spinneret 6 at the side of extrusion is sprayed with a wash gas having a temperature almost equal to the spinning temperature. Consequently, foreign matters are prevented from adhering to the surface of the spinneret and foreign matters attached to it are removed. The spinneret is equipped with a spinning nozzle annularly, and the wash gas is preferably made to flow from the center of the spinneret to the outer peripheral part.
