PURPOSE: To make it possible to compute special parameters automatically, by instructing the average values and covariance matrixes as characteristic parameters representing the color region of a color picture by the number of regions to be divided.
CONSTITUTION: The color regions of an original picture are expressed by spectrums. Wavelengths λ of light are expressed on an abscissa and density R is expressed on an ordinate. The colors of picture elements are distributed at upper and lower parts, with curves 21W24 as the centers. The colors are decomposed by three wavelengths λ1Wλ3 and the frequency distribution diagram is formed. In this diagram, the R is expressed on the abscissa and the frequency is expressed on the ordinate. The abscissa indicates the density at λ=λ1, and the ordinate indicates the density at λ=λ2. The axis representing the frequency is located in the direction perpendicular to the surface of the diagram. The frequencies are expressed by contour lines 31W34. The parameters of the regions are obtained by extracting samples from the region in the contour lines 31W34 and by computing the average values and the covariance matrixes of the regions. Thus the characteristic parameters representing each color region can be automatically computed without manual operation.
