PURPOSE: To prepare granular immobilized material having high mechanical strength, without loss of the enzyme or microbial cells, by using a hydrophylic photosetting resin in combination with a water-soluble polymer polysaccharide which can be gelatinized by the contact with a polyvalent metallic ion.
CONSTITUTION: A liquid composition composed of (A) a hydrophylic photosetting resin having at least two ethylenic unsaturated bonds in the molecule, e.g. unsaturated polyester having high acid value, unsaturated acrylic resin, etc., (B) a wate-soluble polymeric polysaccharide which can be gelatinized by the contact with polyvalent metallic ion, e.g. an alkali metal salt of alginic acid, carrageenan, etc., (C) a photopolymerization initiator, and (D) an enzyme or microorganism having alcohol fermentation capability and other than yeast, is added dropwise to an aqueous medium containing a polyvalent metallic ions to gelatinize the composition in a granular form. The granular gel is irradiated with actinic light to cure the photosetting resin in the granular gel.
