PURPOSE: To produce a lead coated steel pipe metallically joined with lead on the outside circumferential surface thereof at a low cost by dipping the steel pipe in an aq. soln. of chloride or a molten salt, then depositing molten lead on said steel pipe by a conventional method.
CONSTITUTION: A steel pipe 3 is dipped in a treating chemical 5 consisting of an aq. soln. or molten salt of chloride such as zinc chloride, tin chloride, antimony chloride, ammonium chloride, sodium chloride or the like filled in a pretreatment vessel 15. The pipe 3 deposited with the chemical 5 on the outside circumferential surface is inserted through the insertion port 14 of a molten lead furnace 11 into molten lead 1, and is drawn together with the lead 1 from a nozzle 13. The lead 1 is cooled and solidified by the cooling water from a supply nozzle 4 for cooling water in this state, whereby the lead coated layer 2 metallically joined on the outside circumferential surface of the pipe 3 is formed.
