PURPOSE: To detect the flight speed of an individual ink droplet, in an ink jet recording apparatus, by processing the electrical change of a detection electrode with the flight of charged ink droplet.
CONSTITUTION: An ink droplet 3 from a nozzle 2 is charged by a charging electrode 5 and flied toward an ink droplet adhering body 8 as the charged ink droplet 3. As the charged ink droplet passes the charging electrode 5 and approaches a detection electrode 6, an induced current is flowed to the detection electrode 6. A detection circuit 10 processes the change in the induced current flowing through the detection electrode 6 and detects time when the ink droplet 3 passes the detection electrode 6 and time when said ink droplet 3 is adhered to the adhering body 8. Subsequently, a flight speed V is calculated on the basis of a time required in flying the ink droplet 3 between the detection electrode 6 and the adhering body 8 and the distance D between the detection electrode 6 and the adhering body 8. By this method, the flight speed of the individual ink droplet can be detected.
