Abstract:
PURPOSE:To reduce sliding friction and to prevent the inner peripheral surface of a cylinder from being damaged by disposing a surface reforming layer on the inner peripheral surface of a cylinder member of a shock absorber, in which a piston member is slidably inserted. CONSTITUTION:A shock absorber 1 includes a piston member 13 integral with a piston rod 12, which is inserted in a cylinder member 11. The piston member 13 is slided along the inner peripheral surface of the cylinder member 11 through a piston ring fitted to the outer periphery of a main body 14. In this case, a surface hardening layer 20 is formed on the inner peripheral surface of the cylinder member 11 formed by a steel pipe, which the piston member 13 is brought into sliding contact with. The surface hardening layer 20 may be preferably a layer plated with chromium. Besides, a layer plated with nickel, a soft nitriding layer, a cementation layer, a boron layer or quenching hardening layer may be used. The surface hardening layer 20 may include a solid lubricating layer.
