PURPOSE: To obtain a graphitized product having uniform quality in high electrical power efficiency, in the resistance-heating graphitization of formed carbon articles arranged in plural rows in a graphitization furnace, by adjusting the electrical resistance of each row of the article to eliminate the voltage difference between rows.
CONSTITUTION: A number of the formed carbon articles 5 to be graphitized are made to contact with each other and placed in the graphitization furnace 4, and coke powder 7 is filled between the articles and the furnace as a packing material. Both terminals of each row of the formed carbon articles are connected with the terminal electrodes 3, 6, and the row of the formed carbon articles connected in series is electrified with the electrical source 1. The article is heated and graphitized at an extremely high temperature by the Joule heat. In the above process, the temperature difference among the rows of the formed carbon articles is detected as a potential difference by the potential detector 10, and the pressure of the head 81 pressing the terminal electrode 6 is controlled by the hydraulic cylinder 8 according to the potential difference. The electrical resistance of each row can be made uniform, and all the rows are heated uniformly. Consequently, the graphitized product having uniform quality can be obtained in high electrical power efficiency.
