PURPOSE: To obtain an active carbon fiber electrode with a high surface area utilization rate by thermally treating carbon fiber or active carbon fiber in an atmosphere of an inactive gas, an oxidizing atmosphere or a reducing atmosphere.
CONSTITUTION: It is possible to increase the specific surface area and the fine hole volume of a raw material fiber by thermally treating carbon fiber or active carbon fiber under various conditions. It is also possible to reduce the number of surface functional groups by reduction or evacuation and to increase the fine hole volume of the raw material fiber by sintering its fine holes by thermal treatment with an inactive gas. As a result, a homogeneous electric double layer can be formed on the surfaces of active carbon particles having a large specific surface area, thereby greatly improving the utilization rate of the active carbon surfaces and producing a capacitor with a great capacity per unit volume. This capacitor can serve as a battery electrode exhibiting high performance.
