PURPOSE: To simplify the structure of a manual paper feeder also used as a document table cover, by providing a clip for grasping the leading edge of document on a paper feed belt then detecting grasp of document and performing copying operation.

CONSTITUTION: A clip 8 or a conductor is arranged while directing the opening in counter-rotary direction of belt 3 on the belt 3 to be rotated in the arrow direction through rotation of a roller 7 to be driven by a driver 17. The projecting section 12 and the receiving section 12' of an optical sensor are arranged vertically while holding the belt 3 between them, and upon detection of a position detecting hole 3a on the belt 3 through said sensor, said belt 3 is stopped thus to stop the clip 8 at the position corresponding with a clip open/close device A. Under this state, a clip open/close button 13 is depressed to push open the clip 8 through an arm 14 thus to grasp a document. Grasping of document is detected through a detection switch SW2 containing an electrode 9 to start copying.
