PURPOSE: To reduce an amt. of silver to be used and to enhance image color reproducibility, color formation speed and max. color density by using a specified pyrazolotetrazole type coupler as a magenta coupler.
CONSTITUTION: A coupler to be used as a magenta coupler is 1H-pyrazolo [1, 5-d]-tetrazole, such as a compd. of formula II, and represented by general formula I in which X is H or a group releasable on coupling, and R1 is H or a substituent, or R1 or X may form a large substituent having a mol.wt. of ≥about 5,000. A color image is formed by coupling a magenta coupler with the oxidized product of an aromatic primary amine developing agent oxidized with silver halide to form a magenta dye image, and in this method, (i) about 2 ×10-3W5×10-1mol of said coupler is added to a photosensitive material, or (ii) 0.001W0.1mol of said coupler to one liter of color developing bath.
