PURPOSE: To prevent any short circuits of a sealed alkaline storage battery by spraying an aqueous alkali solution over the surfaces of a negative plate made of cadmium oxide and a caking agent before performing drying.

CONSTITUTION: After a mixture of cadmium oxide and a caking agent is applied to the surfaces of a porous plate with 0.1mm thickness in such a manner as to adjust the total thickness of the mixture layers to about 1mm, 20% aqueous sodium-hydroxide solution is sprayed over both surfaces. The amount of the aqueous solution sprayed is adjusted to be about 0.5cc per 100cm2. Ater that, the thus formed body is dried to form a surface layer of cadmium hudroxide having a thickness of 0.1∼0.2mm. If the thickness of the cadmium hydroxide layer is smaller than 0.1mm, sufficient mechanical strength of the layer can not be achieved and short circuits easily occur. If the thickness of the cadmium hydroxide layer is than 0.2mm, the layer becomes too hard and it becomes difficult to handle the plate.
