PURPOSE: To obtain an accurate operation point near the intersection of curves of transmitted light intensity according to a pattern with which an effective electric field applied to a channel is maximum when an optional voltage is applied and a pattern with which the field is minimum, by forming an optical shutter array on a substrate which has electrooptic effect.
CONSTITUTION: Plural parallel linear electrodes 102, 103...111 are formed on the surface of the substrate 10 with electrooptic effect and channels CH1WCH9 are formed between electrodes. While the electrodes 102W106 are held at a level H, the electrodes 107W111 are held at a level L, an electric field is applied to the channel CH5, which is turned on, thereby transmitting an image of a dot D1. In this case, the applied voltage and transmitted light intensity are as shown by a curve I . When images of dots D1WD4 are transmitted through the channels CH4WCH6, the electrodes 102W105, and 107 are held at the level H and the electrodes 106 and 108W111 are held at the level L so as to apply an electric field to the channels CH4WCH6, and then the voltage and transmitted light intensity are shown by a curve II. In this case, I is maximum and II is minimum for the channel CH5. Therefore, accurate operation is performed with a voltage near the intersection P.
