PURPOSE: To cut stably a contact character by detecting plural characters which contact with each other, and detecting its contact point.
CONSTITUTION: As for an unknown pattern converted to a binary-coded pattern by a photoelectric converting part 11, a profile feature is extracted by a feature extracting part 12. A contact character deciding part 13 receives the profile information of a character pattern from a memory, decides a character pattern whose profile length is above some prescribed value, as a contact character, and outputs it to a contact character separating part 14. As for other deciding method, it is also possible to decide it by deriving X coordinate maximum value and the minimum value of a profile of a character from the profile information. A character pattern of one character unit which is cut by separating the contact character from the contact character separating part 14 at every one character is collated with a standard pattern 16 by a recognizing part 15 to recognize a character.
