PURPOSE: To increase the compressibility by reducing the dead volume by forming a coated layer on the surface of a spacer laminated onto a gasket body, as for a head gasket installed between a cylinder head and a cylinder top part.
CONSTITUTION: A head gasket 5 consists of a gasket body 50 and a spacer 52 having a part extended over the opened part 51 of the gasket body which projects into a combustion chamber. Said spacer 52 consists of stainless plates, and is equipped with a bead-shaped projection part 55 on the part projecting into the upper part of the combustion chamber. In this case, on the both surfaces of the spacer 52, a coated layer 56 is formed by using a material having a heat resistivity and a compressibility, for instance polyimide resin etc. The thickness of the spacer 52 is increased by using said coated layer 56, and the dead volume between the upper surface of a piston and the undersurface of a cylinder head is reduced when the head gasket 5 is installed.
