Abstract:

PURPOSE: To produce the titled compound extremely low in impurity content inexpensively within a short time, by reacting an alkali metal sulfide with a polyhaloaromatic compound in the presence of a specified organic compound in an organic polar solvent.

CONSTITUTION: Polyphenylene sulfide having an alkali metal ion content ≤400ppm, that is, substantially free from any electrolyte component such as sodium chloride is produced by reacting an alkali metal sulfide (e.g., sodium sulfide) with a polyhaloaromatic compound (e.g., p-dichlorobenzene) in the presence of a compound of the formula (R is an 8W30C alkyl or aryl; n is an integer ≥0, and the HLB is 0W15), e.g., polyoxyethylene monophenyl ether, in an organic polar solvent (e.g., N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone).
