PURPOSE: To prepare the titled polymer having high molecular weight, using inexpensive raw material and simple process, economically, by condensing an aromatic aminocarboxylic acid with an aromatic diamine in a polar solvent in the presence of a dehydration catalyst at or above a specific temperature.
CONSTITUTION: The objective polymer is prepared by heating a mixture of (A) an aromatic aminocarboxylic acid (e.g. p-aminobenzoic acid) and/or an aromatic dicarboxylic acid (e.g. terephthalic acid) and (B) an aromatic diamine (e.g. p- phenylenediamine) in (C) a polar solvent (preferably sulfolane) in the presence of (D) a dehydration catalyst (preferably boric acid, etc.) at ≥160°C, preferably 200W250°C, thereby effecting the polycondensation reaction of (A) with (B). The amount of the component (D) is preferably 0.1W20mol% based on the component (A), and the amount of the component (C) is selected to give a solution having a polymer concentration of 6W40wt%.
