PURPOSE: To enhance the working efficiency of a machine tool by a method wherein the origin setting work of the tool is performed efficiently and precisely.
CONSTITUTION: A tool origin setting device 1 is fixed to a tail stock 2. A mark O is put on the surface of a reference plate 20 at its center. A tool 6 is fixed to a tool rest 5 and the height of a tool edge 7 is adjusted to be equal to that of a center axis. After that, the tool rest 5 is advanced so that the tool edge 7 is brought into slight contact with the position of the mark O of the reference plate 20. Then, the tool rest 5 is advanced by a very small amount in order to push the reference plate 20 in the device 11 until the reading on the scale of a dial gage 23 shows 0.000mm. At this position, the tool rest 5 is stopped in order to let a control device memorize the position as the origin of the tool 6 and then the cutting is started.
