Abstract:
PURPOSE:To effectively use a monolithic catalyst, by providing the catalyst in an exhaust gathering box coupled at the front and rear with exhaust pipes and exhaust mufflers and by placing the catalyst to cause exhaust gas to flow through the catalyst sidewards as to the body of a vehicle so that the pulsation of the exhaust gas is damped and it flows uniformly into the catalyst. CONSTITUTION:An exhaust gathering box 16 is provided in front of a rear wheel and located beneath the rear of a multicylinder engine. The box 16 is formed with connecting pipe portions 18, 20 in the front and rear. Exhaust pipes are coupled to the front connecting pipes 18. Mufflers 22 are coupled to the rear connecting pipes 20. Dividing walls 32 are secured in the box 16 so that the walls extend toward the center of the box from its right and left walls 30. Cases 36 are secured between the rear wall of the box 16 and the dividing walls 32. A monolithic catalyst 50 is provided in each case 36. A gathering chamber 46 of large volume is defined in the front part of the exhaust gathering box 16. Passages 48 are defined in the rear part of the box. As a result, the pulsation of exhaust gas is damped and its pressure is made uniform before the gas flows into the cases 36.
