PURPOSE: To effectively regenerate the energy of exhaust gas, by communicating two operating cylinders of a cylinder number control engine during exhaust stroke with a resting cylinder with a communication pipe provided with a shut- off valve upon combustion stroke or suction stroke of the resting cylinder.
CONSTITUTION: In a cylinder number control engine, a resting cylinder 3 provided with a decompression valve 20 is communicated through a communication pipe 25, during combustion stroke of the resting cylinder 3, with an operating cylinder 1 during exhaust stroke, and communicated, during suction stroke of the resting cylinder 3, with an operating cylinder 5 during exhaust stroke. All cylinders are provided with connecting valves 26 through 28. Upon partial cylinder operation cams 29 through 32, the connecting valves 26 through 28 and the decompression valve 20 are made into contact with each other to drive the valves, and exhaust gas from the operating cylinders 1, 5 are introduced into the resting cylinder 3 during combustion stroke and suction stroke, thereby the energy of exhaust gas is effectively regenerated and used.
