PURPOSE: To manufacture the titled material while preventing the cracking of each layer between fabrics of carbon fiber by heating a laminate of fabrics of carbon fiber or fiber as a starting material for carbon fiber in an atmosphere of gaseous hydrocarbon to deposite carbon on the surfaces of the fabrics by thermal decomposition and by carrying out impregnation and other treatment.
CONSTITUTION: Fabrics 21 of carbon fiber are laminated in a prescribed shape and stitched up with stitching thread 22 of carbon fiber to form a laminate 20. The laminate 20 is heated in an atmosphere of gaseous hydrocarbon to deposit carbon on the surfaces of the fabrics 21 by thermal decomposition. The laminate 20 is then immersed in liq. pitch or the like in a container, and it is heated under pressure together with the container to impregnate the pitch into the laminate 20 and to cure it. The resulting cured preform is repeatedly subjected to carbonization, graphitization and pitch impregnation so as to provide prescribed specific gravity. Thus, a composite carbon-carbon material is completed.
