PURPOSE: To coat a base material with a high solid type paint smoothly and uniformly, by coating the base material in such a state that pressure is applied between the base material and a cylinder by a back-up roll in a gravure reverse coating system.
CONSTITUTION: A coating roll 2 having an embossed pattern provided to the outer peripheral surface thereof and a back-up roll having a smooth outer peripheral surface are made parallel axially and a base material is fed so as to be held between both rolls. In this case, the back-up roll 1 is rotated to the feed direction of the base material and the coating roll 2 is rotated in the direction opposite to the feed direction of said base material. A doctor blade 4 is brought into contact with the outer peripheral part of the coating roll 2 after a high solid paint 6 is supplied to said roll 2 to perform doctoring and, thereafter, the base material 3 is supplied between the rolls 1, 2 to be conveyed while pressurized by the back-up roll 1. By this method, the high solid paint can be applied to the base material smoothly and uniformly.
