PURPOSE: To attain easily and surely the character recognition without using complicated circuits, by dividing an input character pattern with a split mark and recognizing the input character pattern based on the result of recognition at each partial pattern.
CONSTITUTION: A split mark describing section 2 is provided at the outside of an input character pattern describing section 1. A split section 5 gives an output by splitting or not splitting the input character pattern according to an output signal of a detecting section 3 detecting the partial pattern mark and of an observing section 4 converting the input character pattern into a binary data. The split pattern such as split left-hand radical, under part and crown part of a Chinese character, and the partial pattern such as right-hand part of a Chinese character are normalized respectively at normalizing sections 6a, 6b to extract the characteristics, and collated with the standard characteristics stored in required dictionaries 8, 9a, 9b at identifying sections 10a, 10b, and the combination of pattern codes is determined at a synthesis section 12 and synthesized by referencing a table 11.
