PURPOSE: A thermoplastic polymer excellent in heat decomposition resistance, transparency, etc., and suitable as an optical material or the like, consisting of specified ring structure units and ethylenic monomer units, and obtained by thermally decomposing a vinyl polymer having side chain reactive groups.
CONSTITUTION: The thermoplastic polymer comprises an uncrosslinked polymer composed of 0.1W5wt% ring structure units of the formula (wherein R1 and R2 are each H or a 1W4C alkyl) and 99.9W95wt% ethylenic monomer units. This polymer is obtained by heat-treating a copolymer containing methacrylic acid and a methacrylate ester of predetermined contents to effect an intramolecular condensation ring closure reaction between segments of methacrylic acid or between the acid and the ester. Further, it can be obtained by thermally decomposing a copolymer containing tert-butyl (meth)acrylate and (meth)acrylate to effect a intramolecular condensation ring-closure between the segments.
