PURPOSE: To facilitate connecting operation, by bending a connecting optical fiber core to small curvature near a connection point between optical fibers, and measuring the level of light leaking from the bent part and then aligning the optical fibers to each other.
CONSTITUTION: The tip of the optical fiber core 1 to be connected is fixed to the depositing unit 6 of a connecting device 3; and the other connecting optical fiber core 2 is bent along a roll 5 or guide having specific curvature and its tip is fitted to the depositing unit 6. A sensor 5 for detecting leakage light is provided at the outside of the roll 5 or guide. Light is entered into the optical fiber 1 to be connected from the other end (a) and the sensor 4 measures the level of the leakage light; and the correlative positions of both optical fibers are adjusted to maximize the detected level, and both optical fibers are connected together. Consequently, the necessary number of workers is decreased and the need to fold optical fiber cores is eliminated to facilitate the connecting operation.
