PURPOSE: To make thinner the wall thickness of an outer shell of a reactor by constructing each cooling pipe to have ≤45° inclination to the horizontal line to enable packing of catalyst with no difficulty and by constructing to permit passing of cooling liquid through the inside of the cooling pipes.
CONSTITUTION: Gaseous products are obtd. by allowing gaseous starting material to contact with grain catalyst at reaction temp. and under reaction pressure in a reactor having covers 2, 3 at both ends and cylindrical shell 1 having a central axis inclining with ≤45° to the horizontal direction. Vertical side walls of the square cylindrical reaction chamber 8 contg. packed catalyst having its four vertices on the external shell 1 are made impermeable for the gas and its bottom surface except the part near both end covers is constructed so as to function as a gas-peremeable catalyst receiver 6a. Many cooling pipes 15 parallel to the central axis are provided to the reaction chamber 8 in order to let the coolant pass through, and the coolant is allowed to flow through an inlet pipe 18, flow diversing structure 16, cooling pipe 15, flow confluencing structure 17, and outlet pipe 19, in order. Further, an inlet of the starting gas and an outlet of the starting gas are provided to a part of the external shell 1.
