PURPOSE: To provide a binder for shell molds which is suited for casting of metals such as Al, Mg or the like having a m.p. lower than of iron and has a good collapsing property by incorporating an arom. bromine compd. having a specific constitutional formula in a phenolic resin contg. a lubricant.
CONSTITUTION: The arom. bromine compd. of the formula[e.g.; 2.2'-bis(4-hydroxy-3,5-dibromophenyl)propane]is added at 0.1W50wt% ratio to a phenolic resin contg. a lubricant (e.g.; ethylene-bis-stearamide). Any resin of novolak type resins, resol type resins and mixtures of both resins are usable for the above- described phenolic resin. If the binder for shell molds contained with said arom. bromine compd. is used, the collapsing property of shell molds after metal of a relatively low m.p. such as Al is charged is accelerated extremely markedly.
