PURPOSE: To provide an IC card utilizing the merits of contact and contactless methods and compensating demerits by providing one card with both the contact and contactless functions.

CONSTITUTION: A signal such as an electromagnetic field outputted from an external apparatus is received by an antenna 23 and the induced voltage is amplified, detected and impressed to an electronic switch 27, so that a power supply circuit for the card is turned on. An electric contact 34 formed on a proper surface of the card body by evaporation or welding is to be used for connecting the circuit of the contact type external apparatus. Individual identification information in each card is previously stored in a memory 32 of the card. When a person carrying the card approaches a gate and enters into the electromagnetic field formed by the external apparatus arranged in the gate, the receiving antenna 23 of the card catches the card, the electronic switch 27 is turned on, a discriminating device in the card starts to operate and an identification signal modulated on the basis of a specific storage information is sent from the transmitting antenna 24 of the card. Therefore, it is unnecessary for an entering/leaving person to insert his card into a card reader, and the person may pass the gate while keeping the card in his pocket.
