PURPOSE: To obtain a modified polyethylene having excellent adhesion to metals, etc., in a simple manner, by adding a specified amount of a hydroquinone, in reacting polyethylene with a maleic acid in the presence of a radical initiator and an organic solvent.
CONSTITUTION: The following compounds are added at once to an organic solvent such as toluene or xylene: (A) 100pts.wt. polyethylene, (B) about 1W20pts.wt. maleic acid (e.g., maleic acid, fumaric acid), (C) about 0.01W5pts.wt. radical initiator (e.g., dicumyl peroxide, azobisisobutyronitrile) and (D) 1×10-3W1.5×10-2 mmol per g polyethylene, hydroquinone (e.g., hydroquinone, 2,5-di-t-butylhydroquinone). Then the mixture is reacted at a reaction temperature of about 90W 200°C to effect an addition reaction between the polyethylene and the maleic acid. Thus the purpose modified polyethylene is obtained.
