Abstract:
PURPOSE:To obtain a large contrast for a positive display by setting the rubbing direction of a liquid crystal display element and the direction of the axis of polarization of the polarizing plate on a rubbed substrate side substantially at right angles to each other. CONSTITUTION:Glass substrates 21 and 28 are rubbed and stuck by using glass beads as spacers 24 at a 90 deg. angle of rubbing intersection to obtain a liquid crystal cell. Then polarizing plates are stuck so that the directions 11 and 12 of the axes of polarization of the polarizing plates and the rubbing directions 13 and 14 of the liquid crystal cell are at right angles, thus forming the liquid crystal display element. Therefore, when the positive display is made, the phase difference in the element can be minimized to suppress light transmission in a black display greatly. Consequently, the large contrast for the positive display is obtained.
