Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain a tolan compound having low viscosity and excellent liquid crystal properties, useful as a compounding component for a liquid crystal composition.
CONSTITUTION: This tolan compound is expressed by formula I [X1 to X4 and Y1 to Y4 are each CH, CF or N; R is a 1-12C alkyl, a 2-12C alkenyl or a 2-16C alkoxyalkyl; A is H, F, trifluoromethyl, trifluoromethoxy, CN, 4-R1-(cycloalkyl), 4-R1-(cycloalkenyl) or R1-(O)m (R1 is a 1-12C alkyl, a 2-12C alkenyl or a 2-12C alkynyl; (m) is 0 or 1)] such as 1-(4-propylphenyl)-2-(4-(1-trans-pentenyl)phenyl) acetylene. The compound is obtained by reacting an ethynylbenzene derivative of formula II CD is a halogen or OSO2R1 (R1 is an alkyl or phenyl)] with a boron compound of formula III (R3 is an alkyl or an alkoxy) in the presence of a Pd catalyst and a basic substance or an aromatic halide of formula IV with an ethynylbenzene derivative of formula V in the presence of a metal catalyst and a basic substance.
