PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tool breakage or workpiece detection device capable of improving durability and reducing cost by reducing mechanical consumption portions as compared with conventional ones.SOLUTION: A tool breakage or workpiece detection device includes: a contact type sensor rotatable in a prescribed angle range from an origin position to a terminal position including a detection range; a stepping motor for rotating and driving the sensor; a magnetic encoder for detecting a present position of the sensor; a photosensor for detecting the origin position; means for rotating and controlling the sensor by defining a period until the sensor reaches the terminal position in a state that step-out of the stepping motor is not generated as a reference driving period; means for determining the presence or absence of a detection object on the basis of an output of the magnetic encoder; and control means for continuing outputting exciting pulses until the sensor reaches an upper limit in the detection range without stopping the output of exciting pulses to the stepping motor and continuing determination processing when it is determined that abutting on the sensor is not detected and the sensor does not reach the upper limit in the detection range within the reference driving period.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
