PURPOSE: To provide a tool exchange device of which the whole device can be miniaturized, the selecting motion of tools can be operated at high speed, and the time required for exchanging tools can be-shortened.

CONSTITUTION: A tool magazine 17 is formed into a flat plate shape. A plurality of holding grooves 18 are formed so as to be arranged in a straight line along the side edge of the tool magazine 17, in the condition in which they are opened in the same direction on the side edge of the tool magazine 17. Tools 13 are respectively detachably held in the respective holding grooves 18. A tool loader 26 is moved to the position corresponding to a selected tool 13. The tool 13 is taken out from or taken in to the holding groove 18 on the position.
