PURPOSE: To provide the device which is not restricted by the state of the ceiling of a building, where the device is installed, and can be applied in the open air and accurately counts and integrates even the number of passers who pass in the installation place in parallel by arranging plural passer detection means on both sides of moving passers in an examination place and setting a prescribed detectable range to each passer detection means.
CONSTITUTION: Sensors 2A to 2C provided in the right and the left of the stage of an escalator detect a passenger M, who passes between these sensors in the direction of an arrow (b), to output the detection signals. An MPU is provided with a RAM for data addition and a counter which counts passengers to register the counted value. The sensor 2A has such detectable range SA that passengers M can be detected up to the vicinity of the center of the stage, and sensors 2B and 2C have such detectable ranges SB and SC that only passengers M in side parts of the stage can be detected. In accordance with the combination of detection signals from sensors 2A to 2C having different detectable ranges SA to SC, the passenger counter discriminates whether the number of passengers passing the stage is one or two.
