To enable steering as nearly normal operation at time of forward or backward turnings with a trailer coupled to a self-propelled vehicle.
A spring device 13 built-in a damper always elastically energizes in the direction to make the coupling angle to be 0° against lateral movements of the coupling portion between a vehicle 2 and a trailer 1. When a turning of the tractor vehicle 2 is detected, an actuator 5 controls the turning angle of trailer wheels 4L, 4R to follow the track of the tractor's turning movement. This facilitates driving without high level of expertise technique against unstable coupling angles at time of backward turnings, also preventing the trailer's accidents due to inner wheel turning track difference at time of forward turnings. Furthermore, since the trailer wheels are steered without increase in coupling angle, small turns are secured. Also, the distance between the tractor and the trailer is not necessary to be large, and the short distance can provide consistency in appearance.
