NEW MATERIAL:A tranexamic acid derivative expressed by formula l (R1 is 1-16C linear chain or branched saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon residue, which may be replaced with halogen; R2 is H or methyl; R3 is formula II; P and (q) are each 0 or 1; (n) is 1-16).
EXAMPLE: trans-4-(N,N-Limethylaminomethyl)cyclohexanecarboxylic acid 4"-(2- methylbutyloxycarbonyl)-4'-biphenylester.
USE: Useful for thermally writing in liquid crystal element and element for display. The compound expressed by formula I exhibits liquid crystal phase in wide temperature region close to ambient temperature and alone used or properly blended with other smectic liquid crystal to simply and inexpensively provide a liquid crystal usable as thermally writing in liquid crystal element or liquid crystal element for display by applying a therm-optical effect in practical temperature region.
PREPARATION: A compound expressed by formula III obtained by N-alkylation of tranexamic acid is subjected to a reaction with a compound expressed by formula IV to provide the compound expressed by formula I.
