Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain the subject new compound having high refractive index anisotropy, excellent compatibility with other (non) liquid crystal materials, chemical stability, useful as a liquid crystal electric display element having high response speed, etc.

CONSTITUTION: This compound is shown by formula I [A1 to A4 are each (a halogen, CH3 or CN-substituted) trans-1,4-cyclohexylene, (a halogen, CH3 or CN-substituted) phenylene, etc.; B1 and B2 are each (a halogen, CH3 or CN- substituted) phenylene, etc.; Y1 to Y4 are each single bond, COO, O, OCO, etc.; X1 and X2 are each F, Cl or Br; R1 is a 1-10C alkyl, etc.; R2 is R1, a halogen, CN or NCS; when both R1 and R2 are alkyls, the sum of carbons is 3-20; (m), (n), (p) and (q) are each 0 or 1] such as trans-1,2-difluoro-1,2-bis(4-propylphenyl) ethylene. The compound of formula I is obtained by lithiating a compound of formula II, reacting the resultant substance with a compound of the formula CX12=CX222 to give a compound of formula III and reacting the compound with a compound of formula IV.
