To prevent smear from occurring, which is caused by papaer jamming and slippage of a recording medium, by steadily bringing the recording medium into contact with the surface of a photoreceptor belt when transferring a toner image on the photoreceptor belt to the recording medium.
In a transfer section 22 where the photoreceptor belt 16 faces a transfer corotron 42, a backup plate 62 is disposed on the back of the photoreceptor belt 16 such that the leading end 62A of the plate bends the photoreceptor belt 16 toward the transfer corotron 42. The backup plate 62 is provided with a movable device 64, which moves a belt 72 by a motor 74 and synchronously moves the backup plate 62, connected to the belt 72, in the direction of an arrow A. When the thickness of the recording medium P detected by a sensor 78 is greater than a predetermined value, the backup plate 62 is moved away from the transfer corotron 42. This suppresses generation of paper jamming caused by that the recording medium P is brought into contact with its surrounding members and generation of smear caused by slippage of the recording medium.
